Built in the early 14th century, this Gothic fortress-like ruin is perched above the Elbe River, approximately 90 km north of Prague. Renowned for its breathtaking vistas, celebrated by Goethe and inspiring Richard Wagner, the castle remains one of North Bohemia’s most visited cultural monuments. Today it welcomes visitors for tours, festivals, children’s programs, and on-site dining at the castle restaurant.

Tour

Offering a rich blend of history and natural beauty, explore this expansive fortress boasting magnificent views. It also includes a historical exhibition with replicas of guns and knights’ armor, drawings, pictures of the property, and a scale wooden model of the castle complex.

Restaurant Wágnerka

Enjoy a delicious meal and a refreshing beer after your tour while overlooking a beautiful panoramic view above the Elbe River. We are currently looking for a tenant for Střekov’s second restaurant, the Kovárna, located at the main entrance gate, housed within the original blacksmiths’ workshop.

History

Střekov Castle was built in 1316 and commissioned by John of Luxembourg, king of Bohemia and father of Holy Roman Emperor Charles IV. Originally guarding an important trade route to Germany, the castle came into the Lobkowicz family in 1563. Renowned for its idyllic setting and impressive views across the river valley, it captivated J.W. von Goethe, who declared the castle vistas to be the most beautiful in Central Europe, and Richard Wagner, whose visit inspired his famous opera Tannhäuser.
