And Yet It Is Round!
We invite you to visit a new temporary exhibition that enriches the permanent collection at the Lobkowicz Palace with a unique showcase of historical globes and the history of globe-making in the early modern period. The exhibition also features period maps and travelogues.
In addition to the restored globes, you can explore a selection of rare historical maps and travelogues. Among the works on display are creations by prominent figures in the history of geography, including an early edition of Gerard Mercator's Atlas and a world map from 1513 by the German cartographer, mathematician, and astronomer Martin Waldseemüller. For a fascinating glimpse into exotic lands, the exhibit includes Athanasius Kircher’s work on China and the travelogue of Johann Albrecht von Mandelslo, who embarked on an adventurous journey to India.
The exhibition is further enhanced with a video presentation offering deeper insights into the significance of globes in early modern Europe, showcasing the craftsmanship of their creators and providing closer views of individual cartographers and their work.
Whether you're interested in history, geography, or the artistry of period globes, this exhibition offers a unique perspective on how our ancestors perceived the world around them.
